Harvard campus in India (MBA)

Indian B-schools to challenge world’s best MBA prog:

The idea of establishing a Harvard campus in India is perceived to boost the importance of the emerging economies. The new Indian born dean of Harvard Business School, Nitin Nohria feels that in near future, it is quite possible for an Indian or Chinese business school to challenge the world’s best MBA programs.

The new Harvard dean admits in an interview with Wall Street Journal that countries like India and China will emerge as competitors in the b-school field, just the way they have proved their prowess in the corporate field. “It’s true for American businesses, too, that had dominated the lists of the global top 100 and 500 companies for the entire Twentieth Century. When they started seeing companies from other countries on that list they said, ‘What are they doing on our list. We’re supposed to own it,’ he asserts. He understands that the thought process of countries like U.S. and Europe must undergo certain changes. The two countries have to hold back their domineering attitude to make themselves a part of the global competition.

How Fresh Graduates Can Grow Instead of waiting for the Company to help of it

As a small experiment, I had put up a skribit sidebar where anybody can suggest what I can write about. Little did I know that it would actually be used seriously. Someone posted the topic ‘On how fresh graduates can learn independently and grow. Instead of waiting for the Company to help’ and today, there are 9 votes on it!

To be honest, I think I am not qualified enough to answer this question. I am certainly no role model. But since 9 people have voted on it, I feel obliged to write something useful. I have jotted down some thoughts on what ideas and habits have helped me, it may not necessarily be useful for everyone. I hope these fresh graduates who voted will pick the best ideas and habits suited for them.
Character and Lifestyle

Instead of focusing on building a career, why not focus on building a character? The career will take care of itself.

* ‘Sow an act, reap a habit; Sow a habit, reap a character; Sow a character, reap a destiny – George Dana Boardman
* As Cal Newport would say, ‘Fix the lifestyle you want. Then work backwards from there’. Too often, we confuse the medium (lawyer, doctor, engineer, etc.) with the message (what is important to us, what we want to do). So it is far more important to figure out what you want out of life, then figure out how to achieve that rather than the other way around. And only you can figure this out for yourself.
* I would recommend reading First Things First by Stephen Covey to help you understand your priorities in life.
* Most important of all, find your inner peace. Remember that ‘Satisfaction is within’.
Career Building.

Basically, you need to take initiative in what you want to achieve, no one can tell you what you have to do, life is not that simple. I am glad the original question poser said that he/she wanted to grow ‘Instead of waiting for the Company to help’, you have got that part right already.

I recommend reading:
* The Pmarca Guide to Career Planning, part 2: Skills and education
* Career Advice presentation by Garr Reynolds
* How To Get A Job Like Mine by Aaron Swartz

Get Results
* ‘Results, Jay. Results. Otherwise you cant expect rewards.’- Vertigo novel, by Ashok Banker
* Do deliberative practice, not just ‘a lot of work.’
* Stick to the 10-year plan. There are no shortcuts to success.
Ultimately, you need to take action and get results. It is not enough to just plan and hope. As Morpheus would say, ‘There is a difference between knowing the path and walking the path.’

Read
My personal slogan is ‘I read. Therefore I do. Therefore I am.’ If I compare myself to my school days and today, there has been a major transformation in character and outlook, and I attribute that purely to reading.

A great part of my learning also comes from writing, hence the blog, wiki, books, and twitter. It might seem like a waste of time, but I learn more by communicating. But that is just me.

* Read, Read, Read, the single advice given by Warren Buffett (one of the worlds richest men)
* Tactics For Reading, by Trent Hamm
* 25 Articles Every Student Should Read
* For every hour that you read, you must gain 3 hours of experience-Scott H Young
If you dont know where to start, I would suggest The Personal MBA Reading List.

Friends
Make valuable friends. This is the most important tip I can ever give you.
Equally important, make the right kind of friends. Yes, it is tough to let go of friends who you intuitively know are not the right influence on you, but speaking from experience, it is worth it in the long run.

As a wise man once said, ‘Tell me who your friends are, and I will tell you who you are.’

Bharti Airtel to quit bulk SMS business

Bharti Airtel has decided to quit its bulk SMS business completely. The company’s decision is likely to pave the way for similar kind of moves by other operators to generate greater consumer convenience, reports Shalini Singh of the Economic Times.

The SMS business in India accounts for revenues of roughly Rs.20 crore every month, according to some estimates. The bulk SMS business is not the priority for Bharti Airtel, said Sanjay Kapoor, CEO, Bharti Airtel. The company wanted to take a leadership position in this area as pesky calls and messages have become a huge irritant for consumers, Kaprro added.

According to Kapoor, since the Trai issued its regulation against unsolicited commercial communication (UCC), the number of phone calls has reduced, but at the same time, the volume of SMSs has gone up. Trai must impose a termination charge of 5 to 10 paise per SMS to raise costs and discourage these operators from persisting with this business model, he said. He also advocates far greater penalties for calling or messaging consumers who have subscribed to the Do Not Call Registry (DNCR).

The consumer should decide whether he/she wants regulation or a complete blackout. Stronger penalties and intervention by the Trai to ensure that such calls/SMSs come with a unique ID and at consumer specified time-slots is a more productive approach, said Hemant Joshi, leader of the telecom practice at Deloitte.

BSNL lost the competitive edge on 3G: Sam Pitroda

Amethi: Sam Pitroda, PM’s advisor on Public Information, Infrastructure & Innovations, slammed state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited for losing its competitive edge over other operators by not starting 3G services earlier.

“BSNL had the licence earlier, but it lost the competitive edge, as now other operators have also started 3G services,” Pitroda said while addressing a function to mark the launch of 3G services in Gauriganj.

“BSNL should think beyond connectivity and emphasis on applications,” he added.
He said that people badly need better data facilities for panchayats, government schools, increasing productivity and efficiency.

“There are a number of challenges before BSNL and it can do a lot more on 3G and improving its services,” he said.

He said that while other operators were concentrating on the urban sector, BSNL has a social responsibility to cater to all sections of the society.

“It has the capacity to do this, but unfortunately its operations are not up to the mark and BSNL is losing its cash reserves,” Pitroda said.

“I don’t want it to be in a position of Air India and it will be difficult for the government to pump Rs 3,000 to Rs 4,000 crore for survival of the BSNL,” he said.

He said that Indian telecom services providers, who have the potential, should improve 3G services.

“You had the 3G licence two to three years back,” Pitroda said.

When an officer pointed out that BSNL had to work in rural areas as well, Pitrodas retorted by asking what the company had done when it had the licence two years back.

U.S. visa fee hike could impact economic ties: India

The hike in the US visa fee for foreign skilled workers could impact the wide-ranging bilateral economic relationship with India, parliament was informed on Thursday.

“The government has expressed its strong concerns at the legislation, stating that such steps by the US government adversely affect the Indian software industry’s interest in the USA and impact the broader bilateral economic relationship,” External Affairs Minister S M Krishna told the Rajya Sabha in a written reply.

He admitted that while the provision is not country-specific, it would disproportionately “affect Indian software companies adversely as a large number of H1B and L visas are availed by them”.

US President Barack Obama Aug 13 signed the Emergency Supplemental Appropriations Bill, which will raise funds for border security by increasing the visa fees for foreign workers under H1B and L category.

Krishna said that even while the legislation was under process, the Indian embassy in Washington had taken up the matter with the US administration and key lawmakers. It was also discussed by the Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma with his US counterpart, as well as by the Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao with the US ambassador, Timothy Roemer.

“It has been conveyed that the legislation would primarily impact companies of Indian origin and is seen as a discriminatory and protectionist measure,” said Krishna.
